The world of plane spotting is a captivating one, with enthusiasts like Cameron Roberts and his brother Gregory, who are on a mission to capture the beauty of flight. But here's where it gets controversial: they're calling for a dedicated viewing area at Adelaide Airport, and it's sparking a debate!
The Antonov AN-124-100, a massive cargo plane, is a favorite of Cameron, and he recalls the thrill of seeing it touch down with his brother. Plane spotting, a global hobby, has a dedicated following in Adelaide, with enthusiasts armed with advanced gear, ready to capture the magic.
"It's a cool plane to see," Cameron exclaims, but the challenge lies in finding the perfect spot. Recent developments around the airport have made it tougher, with obstructions and limited access. The brothers resort to creative measures, using stepladders and climbing objects to get the best shot.
On any given day, you'll find plane spotters like 14-year-old Harrison Lawson, who ventures to the airport to capture the parked aircraft up close. He prefers the terminal's atmosphere, but the glare can be a nuisance. Most spotters gather in public spaces, considering factors like plane size, runway use, wind, and sun position.
And this is the part most people miss: the appetite for watching planes is huge! Remember the Qantas A380 landing in 2008 that caused a traffic jam? Spotters are always on the lookout for unique aircraft, and live streams attract thousands of viewers.
"If you get a diversion of an A380, you can have 5,000 people watching," says Mark Spence, who runs a popular stream. The team sets up in an industrial area, using tall tripods to see over the fence.
The fence, a common complaint, is a photographer's nightmare, and Mr. Spence worries about the future of the hobby.
"We definitely need an official spotting area," he says, and Cameron agrees. Sydney and Perth airports have dedicated infrastructure, and Brisbane is upgrading its viewing area.
But Adelaide Airport's executive general manager, Alicia Bickmore, says it's not on the cards soon. She welcomes feedback and acknowledges the unrestricted runway views, but the popular Tapleys Hill Road site has its challenges.
"It's not the greatest," Cameron admits, and his dad, Darin, adds, "It can live or die by the infrastructure."
Not everyone agrees with the call for a dedicated zone. Jasmin Christensen enjoys the simplicity of the current setup, believing it keeps unwanted visitors away.
