The recent application of artificial intelligence (AI) in archaeology has revolutionized the way we uncover ancient mysteries, as evidenced by a groundbreaking study that has cracked one of archaeology's most enduring puzzles: the Nazca Lines. This ancient geoglyph complex in Peru, visible only from the air, has long eluded comprehensive mapping efforts. For decades, archaeologists laboriously identified new figures at a rate of about one or two per year, relying on planes, cameras, and human eyes. However, a collaborative project between archaeologist Masato Sakai and IBM Research introduced a game-changing approach.
AI's Visual Acuity
The AI system, trained on everyday photographs and fine-tuned with a few hundred known Nazca figures, demonstrated remarkable visual acuity. By generating a continuous geoglyph probability map with a five-meter resolution, it identified 47,410 candidate patches that could contain previously unknown geoglyphs. This approach significantly accelerated the process, allowing archaeologists to focus their efforts on the most promising sites.
Human-AI Collaboration
Human experts then played a crucial role in narrowing down the candidates. Using high-resolution imagery from aircraft and drones, they screened the patches and identified 1,309 high-potential sites. Small drones captured ultra-detailed photographs, further refining the search. This meticulous process, involving 1,200 hours of digital screening, led to the discovery of 303 new figurative Nazca geoglyphs and 42 geometric designs, bringing the total to 683.
Insights from the Nazca Desert
The study revealed fascinating insights into the Nazca geoglyphs. Relief-style figures, depicting humans and domesticated camelids, are more numerous and closer to informal trails, suggesting they were meant for local viewers. Line-type figures, featuring wild animals, are larger and farther from trails, indicating their role in long-distance processions. This distinction highlights the diverse purposes and audiences of these ancient artworks.
Accelerating Discovery
The project's success lies in its ability to accelerate discovery. From the 1940s to the early 2000s, the rate of new discoveries was slow. However, with high-resolution imagery and AI assistance, the pace has increased significantly. The AI-assisted survey achieved a sixteen-fold acceleration, identifying 303 figures in just six months, compared to the previous rate of 1.5 per year. This rapid progress is a testament to the power of AI in archaeology.
