Athletics, Austin Wynns Avoid Arbitration with 1-Year Deal (2025)

The Oakland Athletics and catcher Austin Wynns have reached an agreement, avoiding a potentially contentious arbitration process. But is this deal a win for both parties?

The A's have signed Wynns to a one-year, $1.1 million contract, as reported by Robert Murray of FanSided. This figure is lower than the $1.8 million projected by Matt Swartz's arbitration estimates, but it includes performance incentives that could boost Wynns' earnings.

Wynns joined the Athletics in June 2025 after being designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds. The A's were in a bind after their catcher, Shea Langeliers, suffered an oblique injury. Despite a modest batting average of .222 in 22 games, Wynns' time with the team was cut short by an abdominal strain in August.

Wynns' journey to the big leagues began when he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013. After several years as a part-time player, he became a free agent and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022. He was then traded to the San Francisco Giants, where he played 66 games, his longest stint with a single team. His travels continued until he landed with the Reds in 2024.

Here's where it gets interesting: Wynns' offensive prowess in the minor leagues never fully materialized in the majors, until his time with the Reds. In his first year in Cincinnati, he had an impressive 7-for-19 with four extra-base hits, but a shoulder injury halted his progress. His hard-hit rate skyrocketed to 35.7%, a significant improvement over his previous career-high. Wynns continued this trend in 2025, batting .400 with a .442 OBP and a .700 SLG in 18 games with the Reds. Although his performance dipped with the Athletics, his overall hard-hit rate in 40 games was an impressive 46.6%, with a barrel rate of 9.6% over 110 plate appearances.

With Langeliers returning from a breakout season, Wynns will likely serve as a backup. However, the Athletics might need to bolster their catching depth, especially after losing Willie MacIver to the Texas Rangers. Could this signing be a prelude to further roster moves?

What do you think about the Athletics' decision to sign Wynns? Is this a fair deal for a player with his potential? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
