A significant bust in Port Hope has uncovered a massive cannabis operation, leading to multiple arrests and raising questions about the scale of illegal cultivation. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) made a substantial seizure of cannabis plants and buds, estimated to be worth millions of dollars, following a search warrant executed in Port Hope.
It all began with a structure fire in December on 5th Line in Port Hope. The local firefighters, while responding to the fire, noticed something amiss – the presence of cannabis being cultivated on the property. They promptly alerted the police, setting the stage for a major investigation.
On Thursday, the authorities acted, serving a search warrant that led to the confiscation of over 7,600 illicit cannabis plants and a staggering 100 pounds of dried cannabis bud. The total estimated value of this haul? A whopping $3.8 million!
As a result of this investigation, eight individuals now face charges. They are accused of unlawfully cultivating, propagating, or harvesting cannabis plants, as well as possession for the purpose of distribution. The accused include five individuals from North York: 28-year-old Duc Le, 44-year-old Hoang Nga, 44-year-old Thu Nguyen, 43-year-old Thi Nguyen, and 49-year-old Ngyenthi Sang. Additionally, three people from Scarborough were charged: 52-year-old Shua Tang-Zhong, 51-year-old Zhonghua Ye, and 51-year-old Yin Yang.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges in regulating the cannabis industry. The individuals involved have been released from custody, but they are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
