You won't believe the incredible story of Igor Thiago, the Brentford forward who's on fire this season!
It all started with Ivan Toney, then Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa took over, and now Thiago is stealing the show. Brentford has this incredible ability to find goal-scoring machines, and Thiago is the latest in a line of brilliant strikers.
With only Erling Haaland scoring more goals than Thiago in the Premier League this season, it's clear that this Brazilian forward is on a roll. His two goals against Newcastle on Sunday showcased his pace, strength, and natural talent in front of goal. Brentford's rise to 12th in the table, after a challenging start, is largely thanks to Thiago's five wins in 11 games.
But here's where it gets controversial... Thiago, uncapped by Brazil, is also eligible to play for Bulgaria. With his impressive form, he's surely on the radar of Brazil's head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, but the competition for a spot in the national team is fierce. Ancelotti has a plethora of attacking options, including Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and Raphinha, to name a few.
And this is the part most people miss... Thiago has previously expressed his desire to represent the Selecao, stating, "I've always dreamed of playing for Brazil. I ask God to take me to the national team, but when I get there, I want to stay." He even turned down the opportunity to play for Brazil's under-23 team to keep his options open.
With nine goals across all competitions this season, Thiago is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. His match-winning double against Newcastle took his Premier League tally to eight goals for the 2025-26 campaign, just one short of Brazil's called-up strikers combined. It's a remarkable achievement, especially considering his challenging start at Brentford.
Thiago's journey hasn't been easy. Signed for £30 million from Club Brugge in 2024 to replace Toney, he struggled with injuries during his first season, making just eight appearances without scoring. But adversity is nothing new for Thiago. He lost his father at a young age and worked as a bricklayer and in a supermarket before pursuing a professional football career.
His hard work paid off. After playing for Vere FC in southern Brazil, he moved to Cruzeiro and then to Ludogorets in Bulgaria, where he helped them win the Bulgarian title in 2022-23. His 15 goals and Conference League young player of the season award with Club Brugge last year further solidified his talent.
Now, with Thiago fit and firing for Brentford, his stock is rising. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, a call-up to Brazil's squad is a very real possibility. So, will Thiago get his dream call-up?
