But how does it work? Whisper Leak exploits what's known as a side-channel attack. This means it doesn't directly crack the encryption (like Transport Layer Security, the same security used in online banking). Instead, it analyzes metadata – information about your network traffic that's still visible, even when the messages themselves are protected. Think of it like this: the messages are locked in a safe, but the delivery truck's route and destination are still visible.
In a blog post, Microsoft explained that this vulnerability could allow entities like Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or even governments to see what you're talking about with an AI chatbot if they're on the same Wi-Fi network. The implications are concerning, especially for users discussing sensitive topics like political dissent, banned materials, or even the election process.
And this is the part most people miss... Microsoft's research simulated a scenario where an attacker could see the encrypted traffic but couldn't decrypt it. The results were alarming: in many tested models, the attacker could identify the topics of conversations with 100% accuracy and catch 5% to 50% of the conversations.
Microsoft has taken steps to address the issue, working with affected vendors to implement protective measures. Companies like OpenAI, Mistral, xAI, and Microsoft Azure are already deploying these fixes.
