Get ready for a thrilling baseball season opener! Nebraska's Husker Baseball team kicked off their campaign with a dominant 12-2 victory over UCONN at the MLB Desert Invitational. It was a night to remember at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Big Red's offense was on fire, racking up an impressive 16 hits and 12 runs in just seven innings. Meanwhile, UConn struggled to keep up, managing only four hits and two runs.
But here's where it gets interesting: the Husker offense really stepped up with runners in scoring position. They went 8-for-14 with two outs and an incredible 11-for-23 with runners on base. Talk about clutch hitting!
Three players stood out: Cole Kitchens, Dylan Carey, and Case Sanderson. Each of them had three hits, with Kitchens driving in three RBIs and Sanderson scoring two runs. Carey, with his team-high four RBIs, was a key contributor to the Husker's success.
And this is the part most people miss: the pitching performance. Ty Horn started strong, striking out six batters and walking four in 4.2 innings. Caleb Clark followed, keeping the Huskies at bay with three punchouts in 1.2 innings. Tucker Timmerman closed the game, securing the win for Nebraska.
UCONN managed to score first in the opening frame, but the Husker offense quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Jeter Worthley, making his Husker debut, went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Joshua Overbeek also had a solid performance, driving in three runs and scoring three himself.
As the game progressed, Nebraska's pitching duo of Horn and Clark kept the Huskies off the scoreboard for five straight innings. The Husker offense continued to build their lead, adding three more runs in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, UCONN took advantage of two walks to score their second run. But the Huskers weren't done yet. They answered with a powerful four-run inning, highlighted by back-to-back doubles and consecutive singles, to secure the 12-2 run-rule victory.
Nebraska's next challenge awaits at the MLB Desert Invitational, where they'll face Northeastern on Saturday night at Sloan Park. Will the Huskers continue their winning streak? Find out as they take the field at 7:30 p.m. CT.
