Pope Leo's Christmas Message: Embracing Humility and Simplicity (2026)

In an inspiring call for change, Pope Leo has urged the staff of the Vatican to embrace the values of humility and simplicity as exemplified by the birth of Jesus this Christmas season. He emphasized that these virtues should increasingly define the Church in all its various forms and expressions.

Addressing the employees of the Roman Curia, the Governorate of Vatican City, and the Vicariate of Rome, along with their families, during the annual Christmas greeting event held in the Paul VI Audience Hall on December 22, Pope Leo expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received and acknowledged their dedication to service. He remarked on his journey of becoming familiar with the Vatican, describing it as a "great mosaic of offices and services," and expressed his intention to meet staff members by visiting their workplaces, all with God’s guidance.

As part of his message, he requested that those present extend his greetings to their families, particularly to elderly and ill relatives, assuring them that he keeps them in his prayers.

The Pope also reflected on the rich history of nativity scenes, pointing out the various figures that symbolize everyday life—such as the blacksmith, innkeeper, landlady, laundress, knife grinder, and others—that have been included over time. Despite many of these professions being outdated or even obsolete today, he emphasized their symbolic importance within the nativity context.

He stated, "These characters remind us that all our activities, our daily roles, find true significance in God’s divine plan, which centers on Jesus Christ." In a poignant moment, he illustrated how the humble presence of Baby Jesus in the manger blesses all people and their endeavors, spreading God's compassion in every corner of life.

While Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds were filled with wonder at Jesus’ birth, other figures in the scene continued their work, illustrating that even seemingly mundane tasks are part of the greater story. "I like to think that this can be true for us in our working lives: each of us accomplishes our responsibilities and brings glory to God through the quality and commitment we show in our work," the Pope noted.

He acknowledged that in the hustle and bustle of our daily responsibilities, it's easy to lose sight of our connection to the Lord and the Church. However, he reminded his audience that simply by dedicating themselves to their work and showing love for their families, especially in the case of laypeople, they contribute to glorifying the Lord.

This heartfelt message invites reflection on how we can honor God through our everyday actions and roles. How do you think we can bring more humility and simplicity into our lives and workplaces? Share your thoughts in the comments!
