But here's the controversial part: while families are struggling, propane companies like Suburban Propane claim they're doing their best. Nandini Sankara, Vice President of Marketing and spokesperson for Suburban Propane, explained that the extended cold weather has led to a 'significantly increased demand' for propane. 'This winter has brought severe arctic conditions,' Sankara said, emphasizing that the company's teams are working extended hours to meet the demand. But for families like the Heges, these explanations offer little comfort when they're freezing in their own homes.
What’s even more surprising is that many homeowners don’t know they have options. A bipartisan bill passed in 2023 allows any licensed propane company to fill a customer's tank in an emergency, even if it’s not their regular provider. This means families aren’t entirely at the mercy of their usual supplier—a fact that could have saved many from weeks of suffering. But why aren’t more people aware of this law?
