Reddit, a haven for diverse discussions, offers a unique online experience. From home improvement tips to deep philosophical musings, it's a platform that caters to every interest. But here's the catch: your Reddit profile is public, and anyone can see your activity.
Privacy on Reddit: A Balancing Act
With a Reddit account, you gain access to a world of discussions and the ability to contribute your own thoughts. However, your profile becomes a window into your online presence, revealing your activity and engagement across various subreddits.
The good news? Reddit has recently introduced customization features, allowing you to control what others see when they visit your profile. You can now hide post and comment activity, ensuring your online presence remains private and tailored to your preferences.
Taking Control of Your Reddit Profile
To customize your profile, start by opening your Reddit page on a desktop browser. Click your profile avatar (top right) and select 'View Profile'. Here, you'll see headers like 'Posts', 'Comments', 'Upvoted', and 'Downvoted', showcasing your Reddit journey in reverse chronological order.
To make changes, click the 'Update' buttons on the right. The 'Profile' and 'Avatar' options let you manage your display name, profile picture, and social links. You can also control how Reddit notifies you about platform activity.
Switch to the 'Privacy' tab to gain more control over your profile visibility. You can choose to hide your profile from searches, decide whether people can follow your Reddit activity, and manage who can send you chat requests. You even have the option to turn off chat requests completely.
To access these new settings, click 'Update' next to 'Curate your profile' on your profile page, or navigate to the 'Profile' tab on the main settings screen and scroll to 'Curate your profile'. Note that these changes only affect what's visible on your profile, not the actual posts and comments themselves.
You can also access these settings through the official Reddit app for Android or iOS. Tap your profile avatar in the top right corner of any screen, then choose 'Curate your profile' to explore the new options, or 'Settings' to customize every aspect of your Reddit experience, including your display name and profile picture.
Curating Your Online Presence
In the curation settings, you'll find two toggle switches. The 'NSFW' switch, when enabled, hides all NSFW content from your profile, including posts and comments on adult-themed subreddits. It doesn't reveal which NSFW subreddits you've viewed, maintaining your privacy.
The 'Followers' switch controls whether visitors to your profile can see how many people follow you and the names and profiles of those users. While not highly sensitive information, you might prefer to keep your popularity (or lack thereof) private.
Next to 'Content and activity', click the 'Show all' drop-down menu to choose from three options: 'Show all' (the default, where all activity is visible), 'Hide all' (no post or comment activity is shown), and 'Customize' (for more granular control).
The 'Show all' and 'Hide all' options are straightforward, but if you choose 'Customize', a new dialog appears, listing all the subreddits where you've been active. Using the checkboxes, you can show or hide activity from these communities on your profile. It's an all-or-nothing approach for each subreddit; you can't control this at the individual post or comment level.
Your profile will only display subreddits where you've posted or commented. Subreddits you've viewed but not actively engaged with won't appear. You can revisit and adjust these settings anytime, based on your preferences for sharing your online activity.
So, are you ready to take control of your Reddit profile? It's a powerful tool to shape your online presence and protect your privacy.
And this is the part most people miss: Reddit's customization features allow you to curate your profile, ensuring your online identity aligns with your personal brand and comfort level.
