Trump's Aggressive Foreign Policy: A Global Concern (2025)

Imagine waking up to the threat of invasion. Not from a neighboring country, but from a global superpower. That's the reality Nigeria faces, and it's all because of one man: Donald Trump. It's easy to dismiss this as political bluster, but a closer look reveals a pattern of behavior that should deeply concern the world, not just Nigeria.

Let's rewind to February 28th, 2025. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in the midst of a brutal war with Russia, visited Trump in the Oval Office, seeking continued US support and a minerals agreement. What followed was shocking. According to reports, just 40 minutes into the meeting, Trump, along with his deputy J.D. Vance, allegedly ambushed Zelensky, derailing the meeting and confronting him in front of numerous cameras. Trump, supposedly an ally, reportedly pressured Zelensky to agree to a ceasefire with Russia, essentially blaming Ukraine for the invasion of its own territory. He even went so far as to label Zelensky, the leader of a nation under attack, a dictator! The international community largely condemned Trump's behavior, rallying in support of Zelensky.

But here's where it gets controversial... Was Trump genuinely seeking peace, however misguidedly? Or was he acting in his own self-interest, perhaps influenced by his well-documented rapport with Russian President Vladimir Putin? This incident set a disturbing precedent.

Three months later, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa experienced a similar humiliation. During a meeting in the Oval Office, Trump reportedly dimmed the lights and played a video alleging genocide against white South Africans. Ramaphosa, visibly embarrassed, attempted to counter Trump's claims, pointing out that while crime exists, the majority of victims are Black South Africans. Trump remained unconvinced. These incidents, coupled with unwarranted diplomatic rows with China, Canada, and others, paint a picture of a leader willing to use his power to publicly shame and pressure other nations.

And this is the part most people miss... This isn't just about Trump's personality. It highlights the immense power wielded by the American presidency and the potential for abuse on the global stage.

Now, Nigeria finds itself in the crosshairs. Trump has accused the Tinubu administration of genocide against Christians, making these accusations on X (formerly Twitter) and even threatening to invade the country with American soldiers. While the idea of American troops helping to combat terrorism might seem appealing at first glance, history offers a cautionary tale. Interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, often based on questionable premises, have led to prolonged instability and suffering.

Could Nigeria become another casualty of American interventionism? Many fear the answer is yes. The worry is that America might be calling "the dog a bad name in order to hang it," pursuing its own selfish economic agenda under the guise of humanitarian intervention. A far more effective approach, many argue, would be for the US to provide Nigeria's armed forces with the advanced weaponry and equipment they need to fight terrorism themselves.

But Trump seems unwilling to take this route, reportedly harboring resentment towards President Tinubu for his alleged support of Kamala Harris in the election that brought Trump into office. Some observers believe Trump fears that as president, he poses a threat to world peace and that Tinubu and others actively worked against him.

Added to this is the undeniable economic shift happening in Nigeria. The country's growing economic independence, particularly with the rise of indigenous refineries like the Dangote Refinery, threatens America's long-standing dominance in the oil market. For years, the US has profited immensely from refining Nigerian crude oil and exporting it back to Nigeria. This is now changing, leading to potential job losses in the US and a significant blow to the American economy. Furthermore, the Naira's stabilization and appreciation against the dollar further diminishes US economic leverage.

It will be clear from the foregoing that Trump’s outbursts and threats against Nigeria are products of a frustrated mind.

So, is Trump's threat against Nigeria a genuine concern for human rights, or is it a calculated move driven by personal vendettas and economic anxieties? Is the world right to be concerned about Trump's actions, or are his critics overreacting? What role should the US play in global affairs, and how can we ensure that power is used responsibly?
