The UAE Tour witnessed a dramatic shift in fortunes as Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) claimed Stage 3, ascending the brutal Jebel Mobrah climb in a grueling time trial. This victory propelled Tiberi into the race lead, marking a significant turning point in the competition.
Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates-XRG) finished second, launching a late chase that fell just short of catching Tiberi. The 22-year-old's determination was evident as he pushed through the scattered peloton, ultimately falling 15 seconds behind the Italian champion. Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto-Intermarché) secured third place.
However, the race's overnight leader and pre-race favorite, Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), faced a challenging day. He struggled on the unforgiving slopes of Jebel Mobrah, losing over two minutes on the toughest climb of the season so far. This performance marked a stark contrast to his impressive time trialing display just 24 hours prior.
Evenepoel's post-race comments revealed the physical toll of the climb. He attributed his cramps to the demanding effort of the previous day, indicating a lack of full recovery. The Belgian's struggle on the climb was further exacerbated by a disrupted night's sleep due to the heat, though he maintained his professionalism by refusing to make excuses.
Jebel Mobrah, renowned for its harsh conditions, lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest ascents on the pro calendar. The 15km climb, featuring a scorching 7km finale with an average gradient of 12%, tested the riders' endurance and mental fortitude.
Tiberi's victory was a long-awaited achievement, as he had never won at the WorldTour level before his six-kilometer attack on Wednesday. He expressed his dream of such a triumph since turning pro, and his confidence and determination were evident as he rode his own race, ultimately securing his first WorldTour win.
